Russian Nouns. Masculine Gender

A while ago I published a post telling about Russian nouns. Since that post became popular I decided to add more Russian language lessons. Right now I will tell more about the masculine gender nouns and their plural number. The bold letters show the stress. JE sound is similar to YE in YES, hence JA is YA, JO is YO, JU is YU. I decided to use J in these cases because I will use Y as Ы letter. Ы sounds like I in FISH, Russian I is softer, like YI in YIELD. ZH is like SU in PLEASURE.

Masculine Nouns:

1. End on a consonant

Дом (dom) – building, house, home

Брат (brat) – brother

Поезд (pojezd) – train

Город (gorod) – town, city

Человек (chjelovjek) – person

2. End on -Й (-J – short i)

Чай (chaj) – tea

Музей (muzyej) – museum

Соловей (solovjej) – nightingale

Санаторий (sanatorij) – sanatorium

Комментарий (kommentarij) – comment

3. End on -Ь ( ‘ – soft sign)

Гость (gost’) – guest

Житель (zhitjel’) – inhabitant

Зритель (zritjel’) – spectator, viewer

Кремль (Krjeml’) – Kremlin

Словарь (slovar’) – dictionary

Дождь (dozhd’) – rain

День (djen’) – day

Exceptions:

Дедушка (djedushka) – grandpa, old man

Папа (papa) – dad

Дядя (djadja) – uncle

Мужчина (muzhchina) – man

Глава (glava) – header

Судья (sud’ja) – judge, referee

Short male names ending on -А (-A) / -Я (-JA) are of course belong to the masculine gender too (Саша (Sasha), Митя (Mitja), etc.)

Plural Of The Masculine Gender

If the masculine gender word ends on Г/К (G/K), Ж/Ш (ZH/SH), Ч/Щ (CH/SHCH), Х (H), Ь (soft sign), Й (short i), then these nouns in plural will end on И (I). For example:

Бог – боги

Мальчик – мальчики

Меч – мечи

Клещ – клещи

Нож – ножи

Карандаш – карандаши

Гость – гости

Bog – bogi

Mal’chik – mal’chiki

Mjech – mjechi

Kljeshch – kljeshchi

Nozh – nozhi
