Kunstkamera (german – Kunstkammer – “room of art”) – the first Russian museum that was open in 1714 in Saint-Petersburg. The first items were bought in other countries according to the order of Peter I.

The exposition started with the collection of “ugly creatures” (genetic ugliness of people and animals) and the collection of anatomic products bought in the Netherlands. At first there also were zoological collections that were turned to a zoological museum in 1832.

Right now the full name of the Kunstkamera is the Museum of anthropology and ethnography named after Peter the Great (Kunstkamera) of Russian Science Academy. Besides the Peter’s collections there are also living supplies, clothes, weapon, craft-work of the world nations collected in 250 years in expeditions organized by the Science Academy.
